"Happy #NationalCatDay!

The Godolphin Arabian, one of the three founding sires of the modern Thoroughbred, is said to have been accompanied throughout his life by a loyal tabby named Grimalkin. Sources say that when the stallion passed away, Grimalkin dutifully stayed at his friend's grave until his own death.

The fabled friendship between cat and horse has been depicted by artists such as George Stubbs, Thomas Butler, and George Ford Morris; the cat appears in many of the depictions of the great stallion. Grimalkin was even a character in Marguerite Henry's "King of the Wind," a fictional account of the Godolphin Arabian's life.

"This #ThrowBackThursday, take a look at the great Native Dancer exercising in 1956

In a career spanning 22 starts in three years, Native Dancer suffered only one defeat, losing the Kentucky Derby by a head to Dark Star in 1953. After his retirement he was a prolific sire, producing such offspring as Raise a Native and Kauai King, as well as a strong crop of broodmares through whom he has left an incredible mark on the Thoroughbred breed. Every entrant in the 2008 Kentucky Derby traced their lineage back to him.
